Holiday Work - Painting on OHP Sheet

It is a tough time during summer holidays, and I have to keep my kids constantly engaged. After doing some colouring  after reading books, doing puzzles and even after watching their favourite shows in TV, they still nag me for more and so I decided to make them try out painting on OHP sheet, which I have done when I was young.

Teaching kids to sit quite for sometime is definitely a Himalayan task. When I had to complete my work, I asked my son to trace something from his mega painting book. He tried tracing a peacock and painted it using acrylic colours. For his age (he was 8 when he did that) I cannot expect absolute perfection but it came out really good.

Designer plate for my Nephew's Upanayanam

Wanted to do something really decorative to display the gifts for my nephew's upanayanam and I made this designer tray. Got a leaf designed green plastic plate which is light weight, I decorated it with laces and patches.

From the ordinary to beauty

After my marriage, I have not worn any designer blouses. But, I wanted to wear one for my cousin's marriage. The one that I had for the saree that I planned to wear was quite plain and ordinary. So decided to design it. Did embroidery using golden thread and then attached some ready made patches to create a design.

Navarathri gifts made in the year 2013

We keep Golu during Navarathri every year. Ours is not a big thematic one but we ensure that we arrange our dolls well. All along I have been buying small useful items from outside and gifted the Sumangalis along with Vethalai Pakku, manjal and Kumkumam.  When I saw many people gifting Kundan Rangolis, a sudden thought struck me why not draw Aishwarya Kolam and gift it to all the people. So drew it on a paper (ofcourse my dad did it as I am not too good at Aishwarya Kolam), and I copied it on OHP sheets. Then jumped in my kids, they wanted to try out glitter glue on it and wow it turned out too good. I was a proud mom to gift those to all those who visited us.

First Try of Warli Painting

Warli is a different and unique kind of painting where the pictures are quite simple and one can depict any event in a very easy way. (This is my own perception). To read more about this Warli Art check Wikipedia.

When we made pakku mattai plates for Navarathri, I wanted to try this on those plates which had a slightly black and not pure white. It happenned inspite of me and daughter choosing the plates very very carefully. The first brown one was done on a big plate and the second Orange one was done on a small plate. The peacocks came out quite pretty. We used these two plates to distribute chandanam kumkumam and vethalai pakku. As these plates are quite light, even the kids could handle them. And the surprising part was they did not bend inspite of the weight of the cups.

Pongal Special for 2015

Pongal is always a special function as it is the first function that is celebrated with great pomp in Tamilnadu. The 4 day festival calls for lots of celebrations with kids too having holidays. We wanted to make something really special for this year's Pongal. We used Air Dry clay to make Karumbu, inji kothu, manhal kothu, vethalai, paakku, thengai and also a pot with Pongal. Son made a Cow too and we placed it too to depict Maattu Pongal.  Hope all these miniatures looks closer to real ones.

Quilled Key Chains

My Co-sis loves different kinds of key chains and so I decided to gift her a key chain for her birthday with the first letter of her name. Though I am not sure whether I have made the alphabet clear enough, I was happy she liked it. This is not a proper key chain. I was able to get only the ring in a local shop so used silver dangler chain, used tweezer to straighten it and added pearl to it so that it will have a beautified look. Made K using brown coloured strip. One long leaf and two small curved leaf made a K and to have it hung used tightly wound coil to secure with one other.

Black and White Jhumka for a lovely woman

Most Saggitarians love black the most. Don't ask me how do I know. This design is created for a new friend who is also a Saggitarian and who loves black the most. Simple plain black will not look good was my feel, though I made a few other plain black  studs and jhumkas. This combo turned out pretty good. Again I had used just toothpick and my fingers to make the coils and the jhumka. Thats why it is in conical shape than the normal dome shape. Decorated it with pearls.

Quilled Pearl Long Chain

The Pearl Chain came out pretty well. A combination of quilled pendant and pearls, this colour is the center of attraction and jelled well with the same colour combination.

A gift set in Quilling

Tried making a jhumka and necklace set as a gift for a wonderful person's birthday. This is made matching to the dress she had purchased for the special occassion. . Did not tell her that I am making this for her. May be I can call it a conspiracy that me and her daughter planned. The jhumka turned out really good and this design def became a big hit and I made the same design in different colour combos. First time, learnt that I need to make it shiny so used varnish to give it a shiny look.

Painted wooden photo frame

I purchased MDF laser cut wooden photo frames both family size and small size. I wanted to gift a small photo frame for my friend who was pregnant. I wanted to gift her a small photo frame so that she can place the baby's pic. So I painted one of the frame using Acrylic Pearl colour and decorated it with ceramic cone. It turned out really pretty and she liked it very much.

3D Shivalingam first try of miniatures.

My very first try of Miniature, my all time favourite God Shivalingam. When I saw an image of the same in net, I wanted to try it and with the image in front of me, and with my own imagination, I tried making it using black strips. The strips I used were of 5 mm in size. I did not have any faintest idea as how it was made. Though I could have searched for tutorial, I did not want to and trusted fully on my own imagination and instincts.

I attached 2 sets of 12 strips for the base and Aavudaiyaar, and circled 3 10 mm strips for the Shiva lingam. As I didnot have any mould, I used my hand to make a jhumka like hollow in both the base and the Avudayar. Then placed the 3 circles one on top of other and stuck them together. I made a slight hollow on top circle before pasting it on top to give a curved effect.  Used 1 5 mm strip and made an elongated tear drop and attached it to the side.

I then placed the Shivalingam on the foam base and decorated the foam with yellow colour flowers. Used white and red acrylic colours to paint vibuthi and kumkumam.

Quilling Quilling and More Quilling

It became a craze for me to search the net and find out different patterns, techniques in quilling and a few of the designs were quite easy when I looked at them but when I tried to make them it was a bit tough so started looking out for tutorials to do them and I definitely got success for a few and not for others. But still I did not stop making them.

Here are a few designs that I tried initially.

Quilled a pair of black and white combi Jhuma with stud for a new friend who also is my SIL. Her favourite being black I just made these for her as a birthday gift. A person who always appreciates my work and encourage me to do more with perfection.
